Ramblings from the Porch
The Veteran's Day Program went so well. My heart swelled with pride over the way the 4th grade articulately recited the American's Creed. Check out the slideshow of the program here. Thank you to you, parents, for faithfully practicing the memory work with the kids.
Although the homework load was light last week, we still managed to add to our learning in every area:
We started digging into nouns....some are proper...some are not. Some we can taste, touch, smell, see and hear like socks and puppies, and chocolate cake! And then there are the abstract ones that we can't experience with our 5 sense. Take for example, freedom. We see the fruit of freedom in our country, but we can't actually reach out and taste it....or feel it. What about peace? We can't touch it with out hands, but we can certainly feel a sense of contentment when we know that God is in charge. So these are just a few of the ideas we have been discussing in class.
As we move through this unit, we will spend time on capitalization and the idea of plural vs. singular nouns so that will naturally allow us to do some work with spelling.
When there is an opportunity to "cross over" these subjects, its a plus. There's a little jingle I learned many years ago about plurals that I plan on introducing as a means for helping the students get a better feel for navigating the spelling of plural nouns. The gist of the jingle is here:
In addition, we have learned the 13 colonies by name. In fact, for those who have recited them to me already, they earned a ticket that they can trade in later in the week for a reward. By way of learning the 13 colonies, we spent time working on a nifty little memory worksheet to help with that.
Our latest memory work is the states and capitals. Check out the tips and resources page for some online stuf.
